General cargo vessel "City Of Singapore", built in 1923 at west Hartelpool by Wm Gray & Co for Ellerman Lines Ltd. On 26 - 4 - 1924 at 10pm the tragic scene at No 2 Quay, Port Adelaide, where the petrol laden "City Of singapore" exploded. Explosives aboard the ship were heard from up to 12 miles (19km) away. Three men were killed, a further 13 were badly burned in what was the worst ship fire in Australia's history. No 2 Quay was soon to be called "Tragedy Dock".
