SYDNEY H.M.A.S. - 1935

H.M.A.S. "Sydney", a Leander Class Light Cruiser, built by Swan Hunter at Wallsend-on-Tyne, between 1933 and 1935. Originally ordered for the Royal Nay, she was bought by the Australian government before launching. During World war 2 while serving in the mediterranean, she was involved in sinking the Italian light cruiser 'Batolomeo Colleoni', sank the Italian destroyer 'Espero' and shared in the sinking of the destroyer 'Zeffiro', all actions occurring during 1940. On November 19 1941 she met her end in action with the German surface raider 'Kormoran'. Both ships were destroyed, the Sydney going down with all hands(645 officers and men) 315 men from the raider survived and were made prisoners of war in Australia.
