Passenger Liner "Carthage", built in 1881 of iron due to the scarcity of steel. Built for the P&O company "Carthage" and "Rome" were the first P&O ships over 5,000 ton gross and were designed for the Australian trade, their passenger accomodation was amidships with two tiers of deck houses, four masts and two funnels. Large cooling chambers were served by Refrigerating machinery and each ship carried a steam launch.
