H.M.A.S "Australia", completed 1928, built by John Brown & Co, Clydebank. In 1940 Australia was in operations against the Vichy French naval forces at Dakar. In August 1942 she took part in assisting United States forces landing at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. In 1944 allied landings began in enemy held pacific island territories and Australia was part of the force. Displacement: 9,850 tons standard, 13,630 full load Dimensions: length 630', beam 681/3', draught 16.25' Armament: 8 x 8", 4 x 4", 4 x 3" pdr, 12 MG Tubes: 8 x 21" (removed 1942) Aircraft: 1 seaplane Machinery: Brown Curtis geared turbines, 4 screws, 80,000 SHP Speed: 31.5 knots Radius: 10,400 miles at 31 knots Comlement: 679 Cost: 2,000,000 pounds "H.M.A.S. Hobart", ex "Apollo", ex "Amphion" a modified Leander Class Cruiser. Laid down on 15 August 1933, launched 9 October 1934. In 1938 after a refit she was acquired by the R.A.N. who commissioned her on 29 September and renamed her "Hobart" on 14 October. In February 1962 she was sold to Mitsui and Co (Aust) Pty Ltd, and left Sydney on 3 March for Japan to be broken up.
