"Albatross", the RAN Seaplane Carrier, built in 1926 at Cockatoo Island, completed in December 1928. Although out of date when ordered she provided the low cost alternative to the larger aircraft carrier. Capable of carrying nine aircraft, but during her career usually only carried 6 seagull III seaplanes. Her early service saw her cruising to New Guinea, New Britain and Hobart. Decommissioned in Aprilo 1933, she remained in reserve until July 1938 when she transferred to the Royal Navy as part payment for the cruiser "Hobart". She was paid off in Dec 1938 then recommissioned as an aircraft repair ship in Aug 1939 for Sth Atlantic. She was paid off in 1943, then back in service in 1944, operated on D-Day, deleted from list in 1946. She served as a cargo hulk and passenger liner until scrapped in 1954. Displacement: 4800 standard, 7000 full load (tons) Dimensions: length 443 3/4', breadth 58', draught 16 1/4' Armament: 4 x 4.7", 4 x 3 PDR,2 x 2 PDR, several smaller aircraft 9 seaplanes Machinery: Parsons geared turbines, 2 screws, 12000 shp Speed: 21 knots Complement: 450 Cost: 1200000 pounds
