"H.I.M.S Carola", built at Stettin, & Completed in 1881. Vessel was converted to a Gunnery Training ship in 1893. Rigged as a Barque, she had two funnels between fore & main masts with steam pipes before; a Clipper bow; topgallant forecastle; two bridges before mizzen mast, poops & overhanging stern. Hull:- Material; Iron, sheathed in wood and coverted with zinc. Dimensions: length 226'3", breadth 41', Draught: 18'4" Armament: Guns 8 x 15cm on broadside; the two foremost have alternative positions for bow chase and there was probably alternative positions allowing the after guns to fire astern. 2 x 8.7 cm on forecastle; 1 x 8cm boat gun; 4 x 37mm Hotchkiss revolvers. Torpedoes: a tube on lower deck before the foremast, pivoted amidships and capable of being attached to either of 2 short tubes which are placed one on each bow at an angle of 60 degrees with the line of tact. Engines: 2,100 hp, 3 cylinder compound and eight boilers. Date of Launch: 1880 Compliment: 267 Tonnage: 2,135 displacement Speed: 13.9 knots Bunker Capacity: 250 tons Radius of supply: 2000miles at 10 knots "Carola" was the first German warship to visit South Australia. Vessel arrived at the Anchorage on Wednesday 8th February 1882 (Departed Kiel October 8th 1881 under Commander Guido Karcher via Plymouth, Madiera and Cape Town) Departed Semaphore Wednesday February 22nd 1882, Bound for Sydney.
