Lancaster Bridge, the grandfather of my 75-year-old Sri Lankan Burgher friend, namely, Timothy Rowland Bridge, had come to Australia by the ship 'Ann Dashwood'. In fact, Lancaster Bridge had come from Roscrea, County Tipperary, Ireland and settled in Newbridge, Victoria as a pioneer, later on marrying Ann Ellan Martin and having eight children including my friend's father, Frederick William Bridge . Born in Newbridge on January 05, 1869, Frederick William Bridge, had emigrated to Sri Lanka which was then a British colony known as Ceylon and started life as a planter, choosing to become a pernanent resident therein.
