The cutter was chartered by the Queensland Government to be part of the Queensland North East coast expedition, to examine estuaries and inlets from Cardwell to the Endeavour River, for a port for the Palmer goldfields. The expedition left Cardwell on 29 September 1873, to Mourilyan, then Johnstone River, then Trinity Harbour and arrived in Cooktown on 24 October 1873.
