Description

SS Airedale was bound for Taranaki and southern ports with English mails on board. She left Manukau on the 13th February in thick drizzling rain, and on a course which for ten years previously had been steered in safety. The SS Airedale struck rocks at 3.35 a.m. on February 14th on a reef near Taniwha Point, about a mile to the north of the Waitara River, New Zealand and sank within 3 minutes.She was owned by Henderson & MacFarlane of Auckland, New Zealand.
