From researching my family history I am aware of 2 of my BROAD ancestors from Norfolk (Allen & Frederick) who left England on the WANSFELL from Gravesend on 28th July 1861. They were bound for the Gold Rush in Australia. On arrival in Moreton Bay on 11 November 1861 the Cabin Passengers placed an advert in The Courier newspaper to express their thanks to Captain C Jones and Mr Fyfe (Surgeon) , First Officer Gray & Second Officer Lewis.
The Queensland Gusrdian of 15th November published an article that the Wansfell had completed the voyage from pilot to pilot in 108 days. She had brought c. 400 tons of general merchandise and 282 passengers... superior to the usual class of immigrants (!).DUring the voyage there were 6 births and 6 deaths - principally of children under 5 yrs of age. The single men are 50 in number, single women 27.
My Broad ancestors did not fare too well, & ended up joining the NZ gold rush in 1864, where they spent a good many years.
