Henry Alley and his sister Frances arrived in Australia on the Reliance in 1851, after traveling from Queens County, Ireland. Later they arrived in the goldfields around Castlemaine and settled in Taradale, Victoria. In due course, Frances, known as Fanny, married Mr Daniel Wilson, a shopkeeper. They had a number of children but eventually Fanny passed away from consumption at the age of only 38. In the meantime Henry had purchased several blocks of land and he and Daniel purchased shares in gold mines. By around 1856-1857 he had moved on to join up with his brother John and sister Matilda in New Zealand. Henry eventually moved to the Hawkes Bay Area in the North Island and purchased a property which he named “Taradale”. He married Agnes Walker and had a large family. Later he sold the farm and moved to the Hikutaia area where he remained until he passed away, by that time a noted member of the local community.
