Shipwreck of The Harlequin
The Harlequin was lost at Knapp Head, west of Albany, Western Australia, on September 4 1850, during a violent northwest gale. It was on a voyage from Adelaide, South Australia to Singapore with a cargo of flour, sugar and copper. Aboard were the Master, Mr. Welsh (not Walsh as reported), his wife of one month, Ellen Mary (nee Chamberlain) and eight crew. Three of the crew lost their lives and seven survivors including Mr and Mrs Welsh walked overland to Albany. The site of the shipwreck has been located but is heavily broken up. The ship Calder brought the Captain, his wife and the remaining crew back to Port Adelaide.
