James was born on 2 May 1809 at Plymouth, Devon, England. He was baptized at St Andrew's on 14 May 1809 in Plymouth, Devon, England. He married Susanna Follett on 14 Jun 1833 at West Teignmouth, Devon, England. James was employed in 1838, at Exeter, Devon, England, as a "smith."
On the 7th January 1839 James applied to Mr J Horsey to be registered as an "Emmigrant Labourer for Free Passage to South Australia". At this time his occupation was listed as Blacksmith and his Residence was given just as Exeter. He was 29 years old then and his wife (Susanna) was 26. They had listed as children, one boy aged 3 years (James John) and a daughter aged 9 months (Susanna Follett). His "Embarkation No." was 2638.
James arrived on 24 Sep 1839 aboard the "Recovery" with his wife, son and daughter, four months after leaving London.
James' first wife, Susanna died on 19th July 1862. He married Mary Rouse on 24 Mar 1866 at Melbourne, Victoria. Mary was described as "from Adelaide."
James died on 27 Nov 1877 at South Tylden, Victoria, from chronic hepatitis which he had been suffering for 2 months. at age 68. He was attended to by Dr Petell who last saw him a fortnight before his death. [Reg Vic No: 12673]. His body was interred on 28 Nov 1877 at Tylden, Victoria, at the local cemetery. He had spent 20 years in South Australia and 18 years in Victoria.
