Thomas Garnaut is a direct ancestor of mine and of many of the Adelaide Garnaut descendants . He was born in Cornwall and was a master mariner and owner/operator of ketches there. He and his wife Honor brought their family out from England to Adelaide in 1849, aboard the ship "Gratitude". Daughter Amelia was born in Adelaide and in due course married into the Rix family from Surrey, who in 1853 had also sailed to Adelaide from England. Amelia was the mother of my grandfather Edward (Eddie) Rix, born in 1888, a Glenelg club AFL football legend. My own mother Areta was the daughter of Eddie and Stella. Going further back in history, Thomas Garnaut's father was Louis Garnaud, born in France. Louis' story is interesting. He was not a Huguenot as some have thought. He was a French master mariner taken prisoner of war in the 1790s by the English. He then married and settled in Cornwall and some of the family continued their maritime interests in Australia.
