John Thomas Haynes was a professional seaman and had sailed throughout the world prior to going from Launceston to Kangaroo Island in 1838. His 'wife' going to SA was Mary Ann Dix, nee Browning, an ex convict and the child was Charles Dix born New Norfolk who lived most of his life as John Dickes Haynes.
JT Haynes, then the publican at the first Commercial Inn in Port Adelaide, was in the Sophia Jane in 1844 when the vessel, returning home at the end of the season, was caught up in a gale off Rosetta Head (known as the Bluff at Victor Harbour). The vessel was lost and so too JT Haynes and the vessel master. JT Haynes had a whaling station at Hog Bay, KI and another at Cape Jervis.
