For several reasons, I believe the Mary Langman who arrived on the Rajasthan 5 Feb 1840 (Certificate number 6069/Embarkation number 3740) and listed as a domestic servant from Cheriton, UK, is the Mary Longman who later married William Earle McArthur at St John's Church, Adelaide on 2 March 1942. William McArthur had previously arrived into Holdfast Bay on the 'Recovery' with his first wife Eliza and at least one son, Benjamin, on 7 August 1840 (Eliza died 18 Sept 1840, with a one day old son dying 7 August 1840).
Mary McArthur went on to have three daughters (one of whom was my great great grandmother, also named Mary, and who married a Joseph Burnell). Mary (Sr) died aged 88 on 11 February 1896 at Second Valley, and seems to have been estranged from her husband William Earle McArthur. It seems she was sentenced to one week in gaol in 1851 after being charged with being a 'dangerous lunatic' (Ref Adelaide Observer, Sat 11 January 1851), although I've not managed to track down any official documents as to the accuracy of this. She was living with her family in Willunga at the time.In 1882, according to the Evening Journal, 6 March 1882, she applied to be admitted to the Blind, Deaf and Dumb Institution, but was knocked back as being ineligible. Again, I can find no formal documentation as to this. William Earle McArthur was still alive at this stage. Mary (Sr) is buried in Lot 167, Bullaparinga, Rapid Bay.
I would be really happy to be contacted by anyone who can fill in or correct any of the information i give here.
