We as a Family of 3 children & my Father & Mother, Left Southampton on 23 May 1956.
Our ship was the NEW AUSTRALIA. We travelled to ADEN, COLUMBO, PORT SAID through the SUEZ CANAL & on to FREMANTLE & arriving at Station pier, MELBOURNE on 21 JUNE 1956.
The voyage was very memorable, as was the bitterly cold Melbourne weather on arrival. Nevertheless, we braved the weather for a short distance, before catching a taxi to St Kilda.
We were happy to get back on land & get a nice pot of tea & a cold English Pork pie... or so we thought! but all they could offer was a cold milk shake & a hot Four'n'Twenty pie.
After that we got a taxi back to the ship, which was a real rust bucket & not very nice at all compared to some of the other ships that were carrying Immigrants out to Australia or THE LAND DOWN UNDER as it was called by the Immigrants.
