William Edward Rout was my father. He came to Australia under a scheme that saw underprivleged lads come to South Australia to work as apprentices in horticultural or agriculture on Government research stations. This was a different scheme to the Barwell Boys. He was fortunate to be sent to the Berri Experimental Orchard where he successfully completed his 2 year apprenticeship and was then appointed to the orchard staff where he remained for the next 45 years until the Orchard was sold. He then spent his final two years before retirement in the Horticultural Advisors office in Berri as a practical advisor to local orchardists. I am just completing an autobiography of his life and times in the Riverland from 1922 to 1969.
