George Moore Bethell was an inventor and entrepreneur and the Managing Director of the Sydney-based Automatic Totalisators Limited in May, 1919 when he travelled overseas with a complete working model of the George Julius (later Sir George) designed tote with the objective of demonstrating it in France, South Africa and South America. As a result of his visit, a commission of French racing officials were observers at the Sydney Easter in 1921, later placing an order with A.T.L. for what became the world's largest totalizator installation at the Longchamps course.
