My great-grandfather Thomas George Purvis (1861-1933) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T_G_Purvis) was an apprentice on the Arabella from ca. 3/6/1880 - 2/12/1882. He later served as 2nd mate on the clipper La Escocesa (1884-5), obtained his master's certificate in 1887, but gave up sailing to become a merine artist in 1891. He mostly painted full-rigged sailing ships - the Arabella and La Escocesa seem to heve been the two of which he had direct experience.
