We left Southampton on the Esperance Bay in 1954, about August or September, for Australia.
As the ship left Southampton, we threw down a paper streamer, and my mother said, someone will catch it and hold on to it, when the streamer breaks, we have left England.
I remember there was a life jacket drill, and my mother could not find our life jackets. I remember us getting off in Aden and looking around at the Arabs sitting on the ground selling things. My mother bought me a plastic fan, that I had for some years, but unfortunatley it is now lost.
I remember arriving in Perth, and I was allowed to go down to the quayside for a short while. This was the first time I touched Australian soil.
