The Governor Macquarie made a journey to the Hokianga Harbour in 1827 under Captain Kent. On board was Augustus Earle who, as a freelance artist has documented the journey in is book "A narrative of a nine months' residence in New Zealand in 1827". John Martin was also aboard the ship, and after marrying Kiriora, the daughter of a local tohunga, he became the first Pilot of the Hokianga Harbour; the first pilot in NZ.

Edward Luttrell (1786-1811) sailed twice as 4th officer aboard the Experiment under Captain Francis Withers before he deserted ship in NSW in 1804. As mate in 1805 Edward survived the wrecking of the Betsy in the Philippines. He was the master of the Union in 1810 but died on the Indian Ocean while onboard the Governor Macquarie in 1811
