My father John Oxberry was a soldier in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. He was made a Prisoner Of War after the fall of Singapore. After a few years working building a railway in Thailand he was transferred to the Japanese mainland. POWs ( 300 British and 300 Dutch) boarded the Hakushika Maru in Singapore on August 4th 1944 and disembarked in Moji on August 13th 1944. He was not impressed with either the accomodation or the service. The Hakushika Maru was sunk on October 18th 1944 by the American submarine USS Bluegill with the loss of 1,186 Japanese soldiers and crew.

Hi. My Dad was also on the Maru - but the date I have for its departure was 4 July 1944. He had been at Changi, worked on the railway before being taken to work down the mines in Japan. He was Capt D.E.M. Thornton. Contact me if you'd like to discuss! Regards, Robin
