My ancestor Hans Lorenz was part of the crew who later settled in Victoria after the voyage to South Australia. 1844 left Hamburg 17th May 1844 on the whaling barque (ship) Hanseat and arrived at the Port of Adelaide 31st October 1844. On board were a German and an American captain, a German crew and 9 American sailors. Captain Strandt ran in on account of a mutiny. He discharged in Adelaide twenty of his crew, among whom were seven American’s the ringleaders. With the assistance of Mr Stakemann, he replaced them with new hands, and sailed about a fortnight after his arrival. Eight crew members were charged and imprisoned for 3 month’s hard labour. Hans Lorenz was not involved according to court documents. If a crew manifest exists it would be appreciated if it could be shared.
