Philip Beal, the surgeon who helped everyone survive by distilling seawater, was my 3 times great uncle. He had two distinguished brothers, the Rev Dr William and the Rev Professor Samuel Beal, the latter being the first professor of Chinese at University College, London. Philip Beal, a Government Emigration Surgeon, travelled on ships from the UK to Australia. Unfortunately he died aged 36 on a journey from Liverpool to Sydney on 8th October 1859 on the emigrant ship the Mary Pleasants.
