Captain John Walker Senior was my Great, Great Grandfather. He arrived in South Australia in 1840 as crew on the immigrant ship JOHN. He became a well known shipowner and master with a fleet of ships trading on the east coast of Australia and the South African Trade as well as the Port Adelaide River Ferry from Birkenhead to Commercial St. He was colourful character as reflected in newspaper reports relating to the 1888 Ferry Fracas at Port Adelaide. He has written many poems that reveal an interesting and historical view of his early days in Adelaide and his life at sea. His grave in Cheltenham,Cemetery again reflect his life views and is now heritage listed.
