RANGITIKI

I was evacuated to Canada in August 1940, arriving just before my 9th birthday. I returned to the UK in December 1944 on board the Rangitiki, from New York to Liverpool. We had set sail one day, from New York, but when I awakened and went on deck, we were back in New York! We spent about another week in New York before sailing. Many years later, I saw a TV programme. It told the story of the remains of a German submarine which had been found by two divers. I have sometimes wondered if that is why the SS Rangitiki turned back to New York. I am now 88, so I guess I will never know.
