In hospital records in SA, Samuel Bruce is said to have arrived on the Sir Charles McCarthy from London. Samuel is my 3x great grandfather, believed to have been born in Scotland, but now I’m not sure. He was assistant court bailiff in the late 1850s. He was married to Amelia Smith, daughter of John and Sarah Smith from Gloucestershire. They arrived in 1838 on the Henry and had a carpentry business in Rundle Street. Samuel Bruce has been a mystery to us and I wondered if there was a passenger list for the ship, Sir Charles McCarthy and perhaps a list of the crew in 1837. BevSmith
