Journey Notes

With machinery for the steam dredge, 116 passengers. Cleared out (3 Aug) for Madras with a cargo of copper. The Lady MacNaughten met with very bad weather off the Cape of Good Hope, and lost her top-mast. She spoke the May Queen, for Hobart Town, on the 29th May, in lat.37.53 S., and long.9½ E. On the 4th May a boy named Samuel Motley, while greasing the mast, missed his footing and fell overboard, the ship going at the time about eight knots, with lower studding sails set; she was hove to as quickly as possible, and the life-boat launched, but a heavy sea running at the time stove the boat, which was lost, and though another boat was immediately lowered, and every exertion used, the boy was never found, though they picked up the life-buoys, it being nearly dark at the time. This melancholy accident occurred in lat. 39.10 S., and long. 17.30 E. The unfortunate lad was the son of Captn.Motley, R.N. [Register 16/6/1850]
