Journey Notes
Via Torbay (11 Sept) & King George Sound (29 Dec).
THE VERULUM.-Though angels visits are few and far between, one thing is certain that Captain Angel's appearance at the Port has been remarkably regular for many years past: and though on the present voyage she touched at Torbay and called at King George's Sound to land cargo, but 130 days elapsed from London to the Lightship. She left London on September 1st, but on beating down the Channel had very violent gales to contend against, in which unfortunately she lost one of the seamen overboard, and from its continuance put into Torbay for a couple of days. From thence she sailed on the 11th. and was 14 days before passing Cape Finisterre, with strong westerly breezes, inducing a course inside Madeira and the Cape de Verd Islands. The N.E. trades were extremely scant, only extending from 18* N. to within 13* of the line, which was crossed on October 27. Subsequently, however, the elements were more favourable, and especially from the Cape rapid progress was made, and on the 23rd December she reached King George's Sound, where 200 tons of cargo caused some slight detention, as the means for landing it being so incomplete obliged the master to raft it on shore. This difficulty was accomplished, and she sailed again on the 29th., concluding the passage thence to Adelaide in 11days, and arriving at a period when there will be no delay to her mooring in harbour.
