Journey Notes
The Orient liner Coonatto anchored at a very early hour on Friday morning, furnishing an example of the nicety with which two clipper ships [Coonatto & Pekina] keep company on a voyage of 15,000 miles. All the time, although but once in sight, they have been within a degree of each other. The Coonatto was unfortunate in meeting with a strong north-east after making Cape Borda, and this accounts for her not reaching the anchorage the previous night. Captain Begg reports leaving London on May 1, and on the 5th taking final Departure from off Plymouth, but the wind veered from the wrong quarter, and for ten days she was on a taut bowline crossing the Bay of Biscay. She made a long reach to the westward to cut the Equator in 26°. The trades were light, and the Southern Ocean crossed in heavy weather. The usual testimonial was presented to Captain Begg, and the passengers speak favourably both of officers and vessel. Register 27/7/1867
