Journey Notes
Elder's liner Pekina is the winner in the ocean race, having reached the anchorage on Thursday morning at 4 o'clock. Her first voyage from England was not a very rapid one, the second was better, and the third terminated by making Cape Borda on the 79th day. The vessel hove in sight from the Pilot Signal Station on the evening of Wednesday, and there were very few who were not disposed to assume it was the Coonatto. When not less than 20 miles away a general rush was made to board her; but although there were two cutters cruising, the Secret left the mooring at sundown, and was the first to hail the vessel when off Glenelg. She is deeper in the water than on any previous voyage, but has made several excellent days work - 283, 278, 260 are frequent entries after crossing the Line. From Scilly to the Equator she occupied 29 days; two days before the Coonatto was signalled, but was only in company for about 18 hours. On the 37th day out being in 23°57'S., 35°52'W., a terrific gale was experienced, in which the jibboom was carried away and bowsprit sprung; but no other serious damage is reported. Although the whole distance across the Southern Ocean has being attended by violent weather, Captain Orchard is congratulated on making such a good run. The next run will be on a hat shop to clear bets, for seldom has any match between two vessels caused more speculation than that between the Coonatto and Pekina. The following are the figures of each week's run:- 869, 1,008, 1,145, 569, 1,359, 861, 1,691, 1,671, 1,463, 1,485, 1,468 and the last two days 418 miles. Register 27/7/1867
