I travelled with my parents and younger brother on July 11th 1957 on the ss Orsova from embarking at Melbourne.
We had emigrated in 1955 from Leeds on the ss Strathaird,.
That journey was the most interesting , for a child of 8yrs old, I feel very lucky to have visited so many different countries .
We travelled through the Mediterranean Sea, through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea and over the Indian ocean.
Arriving in Melbourne we travelled to Adelaide,we lived for a while at the Finsbury hostel where I attended Pennington primary school.
Dad found a job and we moved nearer the city into a bungalow on Brown St, which is sadly no longer there.
I then attended Sturt St school until returning to the UK
The journey home wasn't quite as interesting, as we unable to travel back through the Suez canal because of the war.
We spent days and days at sea travelling over the Indian Ocean to Cape Town, where we had
chance to go up Table Mountain.
Then it was another lengthy journey to Las Palmas and finally Lisbon then on to Tilbury.
All my 75yrs I have felt very privileged to have seen so much.
I have lived in Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire since 1960 and am very happy here, but always wonder what life would have been like, if the family had stayed in Australia.
