Journey Notes

With 15 passengers & 141 emigrants. The Trafalgar left London on the 3rd July. After proceeding as far as the Nore, it came on to blow a heavy gale from WSW., and it being found that she was too tender to proceed to sea, she returned to Gravesend on the following morning, where she discharged 40 tons of coal and took in about 40 tons of kentledge. Left there on the 5th and the Downs on 7th. On the 18th exchanged signals with the Inchannon, supposed to be from Sydney via California. On 8th August, in lat.,6 N., long 22 W., fell in with the Duke of Cornwall, from Kingstown to Hobart Town; the two ships remained in company two or three days, experienced nothing but light variable winds down to the longitude of the Cape, when she fell in with a terrific gale from the NW., with heavy thunder, lightning and rain. At times, vivid meteors settled on each mast-head, yard-arm, and gaff-end. Had a succession of heavy gales, with the barometer ranging from 28°90 to 30°10 all the way to the meridian 134 E; since then a continuance of light variable airs from SE to E has retarded her progress and prevented her making her usually quick passage.[Register] Captain to pay £15 damages for confining a seaman in irons 93 days on bread & water for trivial breach of discipline. Cleared (18 Dec) for Sydney with copper.[Sexton]
