Frederick Charles Smith contracts small pox on return trip from London with his wife Mary Ann Eliza Smith. Frederick is placed in quarantine at the Torrens Island Quarantine Station along with a Miss Ramsay. Unfortunately Frederick succumbs to the disease and is buried on the Torrens Island Quarantine Station Cemetery close to Rev Still’s grave. His wife returns to Soudan Estate, Brisbane via steamer.
