Archibald, wife Ann and their 7 children left North Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland amongst the Highland Clearances on board the "Hercules" in Dec 1852. Ann and the youngest child, Malcolm died before the disease ridden ship reach Cork, Ireland. The Hercules ship journey is a horrendous one, only the eldest son Alexander completing the journey on the Hercules.
Several months later Archibald and the other 5 surviving children were on board the Neptune to complete their journey. Only Archibald and three children (son Murdoch- my gr grandfather, and daughters Effie and Ann) survived that leg of the journey with two more young sons, Donald and Archibald, being buried at sea from the Neptune.
The area they went to initially was "Upper Dry Creek", Tea Tree Gully/Holden Hill, before heading to White Hut near Clare where several North Uist emigrants settled and farmed, some purchasing their own land from 1860 onwards in the White Hut, Clare, Stanley Flat and Spalding areas.
