W. Krause was William August Ernst Krause, born around 1834 in Altona Germany, he arrived prior to 1870. He was a Master Mariner and sailed ketches in South Australian waters up until his death in 1898 at his home in Mead st Exeter. The earliest I can find in records is Feb 1870 when he mastered the "Adonis"between Pt Wakefield and Pt Adelaide. He also had, Dashing Wave, Lady Robinson and a number of others over the years. He later formed a Partnership with a mr Schlinck from the Westcoast and he sailed between Port Adelaide and Elliston and Waterloo bay and Flinders island for many years. It has always been known in the family that Krause Rock in the great Australian Bight was named after him. In later years he bought the Barque Waratah from Tasmania and sailed between Pt Adelaide and many foreign ports like Mauritius, New Zealand etc. he circumnavigated Australia in it in the late !880s chasing work. He sold it and spent his later years piloting European sailing vessels between Adelaide and Sydney. This is well documented in SA newspapers. His Son Captain Albert Krause also was a ketch captain up until his 80th year when he died inn1949. He owned the ketch "Mary"for 30 years. He also owned the original one and All for a short time. I see you have Captain Krause at Normanton in the gulf in 1887. This was during his circumnavigation of Australia. He took a contract taking railway iron up the river from ships in the gulf who couldn't do so. This was for the Normanton railway. Still operating.
This is only a potted history of Captain Krause. Happy to add to it
