My great great great grandfather, George Gurr and my great great grandfather, Benjamin Gurr came to Australia from England 1850. The ship was the Sultana.

I believe my third great grandfather William Tapper was a captain of the Sultana. He died onboard on 27th April 1857 whilst in Guichen Bay.

Hi Denise, I was just researching the ship Sultana and came across your entry. My great great grandfather was George Gurr and my Great grandmother was Annie Gurr who also came out in 1850. I think we are related! i'd love to hear from you. regards Anne

Can anyone tell me if this is the same Sultana vessel that would have sailed from the UK, carrying military members of the Anglo German Legion to East London in South Africa, arriving in early 1857? I do not see any recorded journeys between South Africa and Hong Kong before the vessel left on the fateful trip to Guichen Bay but it seems the most likely ship to have carried the legion members. I can find no other Sultana which did.
