Mrs Mary Ann Bethune Denne (nee Hopwood) drowned at night after falling from the deck of the Lapwing at the mouth the Derwent River between Hobart and Bruny Island. She was suffering from seasickness and had refused to go below when the Lapwing stood at anchor overnight off Tinderbox. She was the sister a celebrated captain Henry Hopwood and ships in Hobart's harbour carried flags at half mast following the tragedy.
