JOHN HURST was born in the County of Buckinghamshire , England, in 1823 and received his education in the city of Oxford. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the Boot making trade ; he afterwards followed the trade for sometime in the old country ; he then went to Ireland where he remained for two years , and from here he went to the West Indies . There again he stayed for some little time, and from this once more he paid a visit to South America , and then finally he came to South Australia in 1847. In South Australia he began business in the way of horse dealing , and thus employed himself for some time until he went to the gold diggings in Victoria. Not making any stay there he returned to this colony and took up residence in Angaston and there resumed his trade in 1849. This trade he continued to carry on there for twenty-five years. On leaving there he went to Truro and established himself in business, and he has.carried this on ever since, and by this means he has now the best business of its class in the town ; he also makes the buying of skins and wool form a no small part of his trade. As a townsman , too, he has always taken an active part in all such matters as are supposed to advance the importance and prosperity of a town and is prominent in this respect; he is a member of the G.-U. 0, Oddfellows ; he married in 1850 Miss Dougherty, and has three sons and six daughters in family. In his political views he may be termed a moderate Protectionist. Taken from the Aldine History of Australia (World Vital Records)
