Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. 1911 Nov.1: Maiden voyage to Australia via the Cape, in a record 37½ days. 1914: Hospital ship, 1916: Troopship, 1917 Apr.25: Torpedoed by the German submarine U-32, 24 miles southwest of Wolf Rock in the English channel. She sank on the 26th April, after all 1,752 Australian troops on board had been able to leave the ship.

My Grandfather fought for 9th Division at Gallipoli and was one of first ashore on 25/4/15. Like many who were permanently injured that day he was sent home on the Ballarat, but can't find any record of it on line.
